New Diet(s) moved to Jan 3...

Tonight I had an unbelievable feast prepared by my mother...

Shrimp Cocktail
Clam Chowder

Whole Lobster
Crab Cakes
Broiled Scallops
Stuffed Clams

Drank Pepsi (sugar formula) instead of having dessert...

I informed my mother of the Vegan 21 day kick start and the gluten limiting...

She asked me if I could push it to Tues, Jan 3... She has planned out two meals, Lasagna for tomorrow and Corned Beef and Cabbage for Jan 2... I (gladly) told her I could push it one day.

Today, in addition to finishing the second half of that veggie/bean mix, I had a 22oz Braums Vanilla Malt and 8oz of pistachios...

I had a B/S reading of 124 at 2pm (veggie meal), 191 at 5:30(Braums shake).

I eceived an email from Lorie Stephens today, with a quote from WED about not spending too much time looking back, instead looking forward. I responded that I look back almost daily when preparing my (up to) 21 pill cocktail. But that I am glad (for her) that I did not marry her.

But I do wish I had... Just so I would belong to someone and someone would belong to me. IT is tough to live a life without that, particularly if you have not substituted something else (like meaningful work) for that...

But enough about the past. I purchased an 8 Pk of Rotel, a 6 Pk of Black beans and a 12 Pk of Tomato soup from Sams...

Jan 3 (Tues) Meal Plan: 2 EAS Shake, Beans/Rotel Mixture, Quinoa Pasta with Dried Tomato, Salad (no dressing), Tomato Soup. Will figure out calories later.

12/31 12pm B/S 101

Yesterday, I took 200 units of Apidra after my 326 B/S reading at 7:30 pm. I did eat just after midnight, as chronicled in the entry 'Veggie Delight.' No soda, no meat, no carbs based food.

I went to bed around 3 and slept until 11:30. That's pretty good. No one around in house, they are out. I think I am going to just try to lie down and go back to sleep.

Uhaul has a work from home job available...

...in most areas. Maybe I could get something like that? It is part time- 32 hours a week.

Veggie Delight?

I just ate 1/2 onion, 1 oz baby carrots, 1 stalk celery, 1/2 can pitted black olives, 1/2 can dark red kidney beans and 1/2 can crushed tomatoes. Seasoned with garlic, horseradish and oregano.

Not good (tasting). I tried to saute the onions, adding the celery and carrots (both diced) next, followed by beans and covered with tomatoes. Seasoned on top.

Saved 1/2 half for tomorrow.

Gonna have to get (Grammar?) some recipes. this was based on what was in closet.

EAS Advantedge French Vanilla (Carb Control)

I am examining this product, the protein is a blend of soy and whey. Whey is not vegan. HOw can I incorporate that and be vegan? I feel like I want the protein supplementation.

So on Jan 2, I will be starting the 21 day vegan kickstart and Body for Life.

I am looking at PeerTrainer 12 week program.

Maybe Weight Watchers to establish a base weight.

Or I may go to a Doctor as part of Medicare's New Obesity program. It pays for each visit weekly for one month, then every other week for 5 months, then monthly for an additional 6 months if you lose 6.6 lbs.

I am going to use two of these carb control beverages per day; 34g P, 6g F, 2g C, 220 KCal.

Dr. Neil Barnard's Program for reversing Diabetes and other thoughts

I purchased this book today for $17.31 from Barnes & Noble at the Mall (Stonebriar in Frisco). I first went to Half-Priced Books then Target, but neither carried this book.

I have read the first two chapters. Stuff about research studies Dr. Barnard has conducted. All sample sizes (n) were very small. But all showed the same thing- removing animal fat reverses type 2 diabetes.

My estimated A1c was 13.0 and at 7:30 my B/S was 326. I last ate at 4:30 pm.

I wonder about being a vegan. I am not opposed to meat on ethical grounds. I have to make a change.

Today I read an article in the NYTimes by Tara Parker-Pope, who proclaimed that she struggles with weight issues. Called The Fat Trap, it basically said that even after losing large amounts of weight, the body simply wants to return to its former fat state.

There was discussion of two hormones: Ghrelin and Leptin.

Gherlin is a gastric hormone, often dubbed the “hunger hormone,” was about 20 percent higher after the fatties lost weight than at the start of the study.

Leptin, a hormone that is often promoted in women's weight loss products, is a hormone that suppresses hunger and increases metabolism, remained lower than expected.

Another hormone associated with suppressing hunger, peptide YY, was also abnormally low.

I have, as previously mentioned, been carrying about 300 lbs on my frame since 1996. I may have previously written that it was since 1995, but that was inaccurate.

Two times I dropped to 250: 4/2005, after my accident and 12/2010, after the erythrodermic psoriasis.

I have been as high as 338. But it really hovers around 300.

The 21 day vegan kick start starts Jan 2. I will weigh in then.

New Years Eve Eve Part 2: Exercise

The only way to lose weight is to expend more calories than you take in on a daily basis. Simple math? Not exactly. It is an imperfect system. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight. The reverse is not exactly true.

A lot of my medicines cause the body to gain weight. That is one thing that I will be combating.

Laziness is my primary adversary, with improper choices a close second. The contributions that my meds make to the problem are real, but they can not be a crutch.

This belly was built almost overnight, but has been carried almost consistently since 1995. that is 17 years!!!

I do not have a job. But I want one. I have to get in order financially. I have to wait to hear if my situation can be remedied. I need to make payments to my parents (I did pay $200 in Nov).

I need to sleep regularly, eat regularly, monitor my B/S regularly, exercise regularly, AND CHANGE MY LIFE. Failure is easy, it is the consequence of not doing what is required to be successful.

I need to learn about whole body movements something to prepare me for running:

For the hip stabilizers, start off with basic single-leg exercises like split-squats, lunges and step-ups.
For the core, exercises like front planks, side planks and bird dogs will help get you stronger and more stable.

Make use of the online resources. Go to the library. It is going to be cold outside, so I am going to have to figure out how to do the exercise I need indoors...

This is not a short term fix. This is going to take a long time. But the longest journey begins with the first step, RIGHT?

New Years' Eve Eve (or veggie eve eve eve) part 1: diet

Garbage In, Garbage Out. That was the first thing I ever learned about computers.

Obviously, that can apply to so many things.

Like the body.

Like my body. As I sit here typing, my fingers ache. I mean really hurt.

As I look down I see this large mass, this thing that controls everything- My gut.

Now I've been told it, to, is sick. and that all of thee illnesses might somehow be interrelated. IMID- immune mediated inflammatory disease.

My cousin, Dr. Cush, has recommended that I try a gluten-free diet. The gastroenterologist said that I did not test positive for Celiac Disease based on my EMA-IgA test. Celiac disease is the reason one would remove gluten from the diet as it means there is an intolerance to gluten.

I have been looking hard at PeerTrainer, and their 'cheat system.'

Now I have signed up for the 21 day vegan kick start.

I am not a member of PETA, but I did donate $1 today when I bought a soda at PetSmart.

I am not giving up meat forever... but I am going to give it up for 21 days...

I am going to very closely monitor my B/S readings and record what I am doing with the insulin I do have.

I am hoping to end up with something that is a hybrid of these three systems, where I avoid gluten, remove meat from Jan 2-22, and what it means to be a vegan.

Funny, a nurse at the clinic where I get my Remicade had a challenge where she had to eat 50 different veggies in the month of December. Luckily, there are a number of farmer's markets around (Plano, TX) so that I can get a change to eat right... or at least adhere to these plans...

New Years' Eve Eve (or veggie eve eve eve) prologue

I have been looking at going gluten-free because my primary physician (Dr Cush, my cousin) has been advising me to do so.

I have been reading a lot of information from PeerTrainer. I tried to get a group that included most of my family to try to lose wait back in 2008 using this site. That was a failure.

I have been reading about vegan and how it fights or can reverse diabetes.

Let me stop and list my illnesses:
Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Insulin dependent diabetes, Bipolar disorder, Deep Vein Thrombosis, loss of my private parts in an auto accident in 2005; the same accident resulted in 7 broken ribs, 2 broken scapula, broken clavicle, two c-vertebrae damaged and fused, broken femur with titanium rod insertion, frozen shoulders, hiatal hernia (repaired without mesh), have been 100 lbs r more over weight since 1995 tinnitus, blurry vision (distance/Myopia), Crohn's Disease, had three events of note in childhood, pyloric stenosis, broken left ulna (elbow), and a tick bite that left me paralyzed or something for a few days. I also was born pre-maturely and was jaundiced at birth. I am also color-blind.

Physically, I am a mess. Mentally, not much better. I currently am taking the following prescribed medications:
Remicade, Methotrexate, Prednisone; Apidra (insulin), Lantus (insulin), Metformin; Seroquel XR, Depakote ER, Klonopin; Warfarin; simvastain, Lovaza. I wear glasses for Myopia.

The Remicade is administered once every 8 weeks in Jacksonville; the Methotrexate once a week. the other drugs are daily.

I should mention something about my sex life. After the accident (2005), it was not a priority as there was significant damage in that area and there was so much else to deal with. I basically went 5 years without any activity, sexually or romantically. Since 2010, there has been more activity in that area, and more recently it has been more regular, even though the damage still exists.

Anyway, I pretty much spend my life eating. Everything, I enjoy good foods, bad foods. I (sometimes) restrict what I eat, but not as I should.

One disease, Psoriasis, controls my life. In November 2010, I was hospitalized with erythrodemic psoriasis. I had been out of work since the previous June. I lost my insurance. Supposedly through a combination of these and other factors, the psoriasis went crazy. The entire surface of my skin changed. No longer did I have scaly plaques, but my skin was bright red with some scaling. I was hospitalized for 5 days in Jacksonville, then boarded a plane to Dallas, where my cousin treated my illness. I took a weekly regimen of Humira and either cyclosporin or methotrexate. Slowly I improved. By about February I was well enough to travel back to Jacksonville. I no longer had a place to live, there, but visited a friend with the intent of helping her with some projects. Due to my poor attitude, we never really were able to get any of those projects done.

In the mean time, I secured medical coverage and started seeing all of my doctors in jacksonville. One sent me to a gastroenterologist who discovered that I had Crohn's disease. This specialist started treating me with a medicine that has been used for Crohn's since 1998, but then for Psoriatic Arthritis 2005. I started on this drug with limited success in 2007-2008, but almost full 'remission' in 2009-2010. The doctor was able to get approval for double the recommended dose and at a more frequent delivery (6 vs. 8 weeks).

Realizing that we were not going to fully tackle the tasks originally discussed, and my presence more of a burden in a family situation then a help, I returned to Dallas in November, with grand plans for saving and returning to a place of my own. Instead, I have spent even more then I took in during this time, securing loans at very high rates of interest.

So that is my starting point. I have lost my favorable drug coverage and my medicines are now unaffordable. I have stockpiled some medicines, I figure I can make it through April.

For Remicade, I currently have an appointment February 2; I hope to take my niece Makynzi to Disney as her pass will expire the following week.

That (kind of) brings us up to date...
